The threat of asteroid strike is real, and it has been briefed to United States Congress and the President of the United States. 　Spaceguard Survey was published on January 25, 1992 and since then, numerous space guard programs are funded by the United States and other governments.

Funding enabled numerous astronomers to keep watchful eyes on large asteroids which could potentially hit the Earth, forming International Asteroid Warning Network (IAWN)*.

In December 2016, NASA briefed** to the president of the United States that unlike other natural disasters, NEO impacts are predictable many years in advance and potentially preventable.  (Continue to interception)
